Directions

Combine cherries, juice, 2 tablespoons butter, 11/3 cups sugar and cornstarch in saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened.
Cool.
Add almond extract and food coloring.
Sift flour, soda and salt together.
Cream 1/2 cup butter, remaining sugar and vanilla together.
Beat in egg; add flour mixture alternately with vinegar and milk.
Chill.
Roll dough thin.
Cut into 1 3/4-inch squares.
Place half the squares on cookie sheet.
Place 1 teaspoon cherry mixture in center of each.
Cut small design from center of each remaining square; place over cherry- topped squares.
Press edges together with fork.
Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes.
