Sugar-2 1/4 cups
 
Flour-1/4 cup
 
Eggs-5, separated
 
Milk-2 cups
 
Butter-1/4 cup
 
Vanilla-1 teaspoon
 
Baked pie shells-2, 9-inch
 
Almonds-1/4 cup, slivered and toasted

Directions

MAKING
1)In a heavy skillet add 2 cups sugar and heat it on low heat until melted and browned. Let it cool slightly.
2)In a bowl, mix flour and sugar.
3)In another bowl, beat eggs yolks and fold in milk.
4)Mix the flour mixture and egg mixture together.
5)Cook the mixture on low heat until thickened. Stir constantly.
6)Fold in butter and vanilla and cool the mixture to room temperature.
7)In a bowl, beat egg whites until foamy and add remaining sugar slowly. Beat the mixture until stiff and glossy.
8)Pour the mixture into pie shells and spread meringue over filling.
9)Sprinkle with almonds and bake at 350 degrees until meringue is lightly browned.

SERVING
10)Serve caramel cream pie chilled.
