4 thick slices of white bread, crusts removed
 
6 tablespoons butter
 
For the sauce:
 
1 1/2 cups red currant juice or black currant juice
 
3/4 cup water
 
1 cinnamon stick
 
Rind of 1 lemon, cut into strips
 
2 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in 3 tablespoons water
 
6 tablespoons sugar

Directions

Cut the slices of bread into strips, 3 x 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches.
Heat butter in a skillet and saute the bread strips on all sides until golden brown.
Arrange them on a dish and pour the warm red currant sauce over.
