Ingredients
1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
2 tablespoons warm water (105°-115°F)
1 1/2-2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon crushed aniseeds
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon orange extract
Confectioners' Icing
Sugar, if desired
Directions
1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Combine flour, aniseeds, orange peel, salt, and sugar in mixing bowl.
2 Add yeast mixture, egg, butter, and orange extract to dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes.
4 Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
5 Punch down dough. Use small amount of dough to make "cross-bones." (Skip crossbones if you wish.) Make a round loaf with rest of dough.
6 Place loaf on greased baking sheet. Brush water on top of loaf just where you wish crossbones to stick.
7 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 20 minutes. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven 30 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
8 Mix thin Confectioners' Icing and brush on loaf. If desired, sprinkle sugar on crossbones.
