Directions

MAKING
1)Take a saucepan and add currants and water boil for about 5 minutes.
2)Drain and reserve 1 cup liquid. Cool.
3)Dissolve soda in warm reserved liquid.
4)In a bowl, beat shortening and sugar until fluffy.
5)Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
6)In another bowl, sift spices, baking powder and flour together.
7)Add dry ingredients and soda liquid to creamed mixture alternately, mixing well.
8)Add currants and mix.
9)Take a jelly roll pan and put the batter into it.
10)Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
11)Ice with frosting, cut into bars.

SERVING
12)Serve the boiled currant bars to kids and adults as snacks.
