Directions

Sift flour; measure and sift again with the soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and cloves.
Mix in nuts and dates.
Cream the butter with the sugar and beat in the egg yolks, buttermilk, and vanilla.
Beat the egg whites until stiff.
Combine the flour mixture and the butter-sugar mixture, blending well.
Using a fork, break up the stiff batter and carefully mix in the beaten egg whites.
Drop by teaspoon-sized spoonfuls onto a baking sheet 1/2-inch apart.
Bake in a 375° oven about 12 minutes, until browned.
