Beef Steak Recipe

This dish is a nice blend of savory, sweet, and sour. The meat is very tender and the slightly carmelized onions add some sweetness to the dish.

Recipe Story

The is one of my favorite Filipino dishes that I grew up on. My mom would prepare it on occassion and my brother and I would know when she did because the house was filled with the delicious smells. When I cook it at home, it brings me back to the times when I was younger.

Ingredients

1 cup soy sauce

1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 lb flank steak, sliced thinly

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 yellow onions, sliced into rings

salt, to taste

ground black pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Combine soy sauce and lemon juice in a large bowl. Adjust quantities if desired. Mixture should be a mixture of salty and sour, with neither taste overpowering the other.
2. Slice the flank steak thinly into strips. Using a heavy meat tenderizer, pound the strips to flatten and tenderize meat. Add to soy sauce/lemon juice mixture to marinate for 15 min.
3. Over medium heat, add oil to a large pan. Sweat onions but do not brown. Remove and set aside.
4. In the same pan, add marinated meat and saute for 2 minutes. Add the sauce mixture and turn heat to simmer. Let simmer for 15 minutes, turning the meat occassionally.
5. When meat is cooked, add onions and mix with meat. Cook just to heat through.
6. Serve over warm, jasmine rice.
