Spread 3 slices generously with cheese spread.
Sprinkle crumbled bacon over cheese-spread slices.
Top with remaining 3 slices bread.
Cut each sandwich, corner to corner, into 4 triangles; set aside.
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt into a medium bowl.
Beat egg in another medium bowl until frothy.
Stir buttermilk and shortening into egg.
Add egg mixture to flour mixture, beating until smooth.
Pour oil in a heavy skillet or deep-fryer to 2-inch depth.
Heat oil to 350F (175C) or until a 1-inch cube of bread added to oil turns brown in 60 seconds.
Dip sandwiches in batter; turn to cover completely.
Fry sandwiches until golden brown, about 1 minute on each side.
Drain on paper towels.
