The basa fish, Pangasius bocourti, is a type of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. Basa are native to the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam and Chao Phraya basin in Thailand. These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labeled in North America and Australia as basa fish or bocourti. Always frozen of course in the US. I won't buy fish/seafood from Vietnam or China due to crowded farming habits and the extensive use of antibiotics. Crowded fish=sick fish so they load them up with antibiotics. no thanks! Tilapia, several species and their hybrids of Oreochromis, are the second most important group of farm raised fish in the world. Tilapia farming and consumption are rapidly increasing in the US. Tilapia is now the fifth most popular seafood consumed in the United States.

Fast, easy and tasty recipe. I add in some Lemon Pepper for taste and serve over a bed of wild rice. Has replaced tilapia as our fish of choice.

Basa is often from Vietnam and I won't buy it due to the high usage of antibiotics in the crowded farming conditions in Vietnam (& China). In the US basa fish is also called bocourti In Europe, these fish are commonly marketed as pangassius or panga. I prefer using fresh catfish and yes some spice!
