Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup applesauce
1 1/2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 package (8 ounces) pitted dates, finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions
1. Sift flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg onto wax paper.
2. Beat butter or margarine with brown sugar until fluffy in large bowl with an electric mixer at high speed; beat in eggs, one at a time; add vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, half at a time, alternately with applesauce, just until blended; stir in rolled oats, dates and walnuts. Spoon into a greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan; spread top evenly.
3. Bake in moderate oven (375°) 35 minutes, or until center springs back when lightly pressed with fingertip. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.
4. Drizzle citrus glaze over top; let stand until firm. Carry in baking pan, uncut, and cut into serving-size bars at the picnic. Store uneaten bars in metal container.
