In a mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy.
Stir in flour; blend well.
Spread mixture into a 9 x 13-inch pan.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Spread the jam over the crust.
Beat egg whites with almond extract until soft peaks form.
Gradually beat confectioners' sugar into egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Spread egg white mixture over the jam.
Sprinkle with almonds.
Bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
Slice into bars.
