1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup applesauce
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
Directions
Melt together butter and chocolate in small saucepan over low heat.
Add sugar, eggs, applesauce, and vanilla; beat well.
Stir together flour, baking powder, soda, and salt until evenly combined.
Add to chocolate mixture; beat well.
Pour batter into greased 8-inch-square baking pan.
Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter.
Bake in 350°F oven 30 to 35 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
