Apple Grasmere Recipe
Ingredients
| Tart apples - 3 pounds, pared, quartered, cored and sliced | ||
| Sugar | 3/4 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Water | 1/2 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Margarine - for greasing | ||
| Whipped cream - to serve | ||
| All-purpose flour - 1 1/2 cups | ||
| Baking soda | 1/2 Teaspoon (For Topping:) | |
| Cream of tartar | 1 Teaspoon (For Topping:) | |
| Ground ginger | 2 Teaspoon (For Topping:) | |
| Rolled oats | 2/3 Cup (16 tbs) (For Topping:) | |
| Soft dark brown sugar - 1/2 cup | ||
| Margarine | 3/4 Cup (16 tbs), diced (For Topping:) | |
Directions
GETTING READY
1) Preheat oven to temperature of 350 degrees.
MAKING
2) Into a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, put the apples along with the water and sugar.
3) Cover the pan and cook the apples gently for 10 to 15 minutes, till reduced to a soft puree.
4) Set the puree aside and let it cool for about 30 minutes.
5) Grease a 1 ½-quart heatproof dish lightly.
6) To prepare the topping, sift together the baking soda, flour, cream of tartar and ginger.
7) Add the oats and brown sugar and stir well.
8) Add the margarine and rub it in with your fingers till the mixture looks like fine bread crumbs.
9) Into the prepared dish, spoon the cooled apple puree. Top with the oat mixture, spreading it evenly all over the apples.
10) Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, till the topping is firm and brown in color.
SERVING
11) Transfer the freshly baked preparation to a serving plate. Serve hot or cold, as preferred. Makes an excellent dessert. Lightly sweetened whipped cream makes a good accompaniment.
