Ingredients
1 10- to 11-ounce package piecrust mix
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Sugar
4 large cooking apples
2 teaspoons butter or margarine
1 1/3 cups water
1 2 1/2-inch-long cinnamon stick
4 drops red food coloring
Directions
1. Prepare piecrust mix as label directs; divide dough into 4 equal pieces. On lightly floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll each piece into 8-inch square. In small bowl, mix cinnamon and 1/3 cup sugar.
2. Peel and core apples. Center an apple on a pastry square and spoon some cinnamon mixture into cavity; dot with 1/2 teaspoon butter or margarine. With a few drops water, moisten points of square and bring up over apple, sealing well. Repeat with remaining apples. Place dumplings in 12" by 8" baking dish.
3. Preheat oven to 425°F. In 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, boil water, cinnamon stick, and 2/3 cup sugar 3 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick; stir in food coloring. Pour syrup around dumplings. Bake dumplings 40 minutes or until crust is golden.
