Apple Charlotte Recipe

Ingredients
| 6-7 thin slices white bread from a large loaf | ||
| Butter | 3 Ounce | |
| 1 1/2 lb cooking apples | ||
| 3 oz light soft brown or demerara sugar | ||
| Water | 2 Tablespoon | |
Directions
Heat the oven to 400°F, 200°C, gas no. 6 and butter a shallow 2 pint (a good litre) oven proof dish.
Spread the bread thinly with butter on one side and with a 2 inch (5 cm) cutter stamp out four rounds from each slice of bread.
Arrange the bread over the sides and base of the dish, reserving a few circles for the top.
Peel, core and slice the apples and place in a saucepan with the sugar and water, cover and cook gently until soft and thick, then beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.
Spoon into the dish and cover the top with the remaining circles of bread.
Sprinkle the top with a little extra brown sugar and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the bread is crisp and golden brown.
