1 cup shortening
 
1/2 cup sugar
 
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
 
1 egg
 
2 cups all purpose flour
 
1 teaspoon baking soda
 
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
 
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
 
Powdered sugar

Directions

Cream shortening; gradually add sugars, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
Add egg, and beat well.
Combine flour, soda, and cream of tartar; gradually add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, mixing well.
Add vanilla, and mix well.
Shape dough into 1 inch balls; roll in powdered sugar.
Place on lightly greased cookie sheets.
Bake at 275° for 10 to 12 minutes.
Cool on wire racks.
