 Almonds1/2 Cup (16 tbs), sliced
 4 tablespoons 1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
 3 pounds tart green apples, peeled, halved, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick

Directions

To Make Pastry: Place rack in lower third of oven and preheat oven to 375°F.
In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
In a 4-cup microwavesafe measure, microwave butter or margarine, covered with a paper towel, on high (100%) until melted.
Whisk in milk, egg, and vanilla.
Stir into flour mixture until incorporated.
Press into bottom of prepared pan. (If difficult to press, let rest 10 minutes.) To Make Streusel: In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sugar, cinnamon, cookies, and almonds.
Add melted butter and stir until distributed.
Arrange apples over pastry.
Sprinkle streusel over apples.
To Bake: Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until pastry is golden and apples are soft.
(Dessert may be cooled, covered with heavy foil, and refrigerated up to 2 days or frozen up to 1 month. Defrost at room temperature. Reheat, uncovered, at 400°F. until warm, about 10 minutes.)
