Alpine Olive Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients

 
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
 
1 beaten egg
 
2 tablespoons chopped pimiento stuffed green olives
 
1/4 teaspoon paprika
 
1 large unsliced round loaf rye bread
 
Butter or margarine, softened
 
4 slices bacon, crisp cooked, drained, and crumbled
 
Pimiento stuffed green olives, sliced

Directions

Combine cheese, egg, chopped olives, and paprika.
Slice rounded top off loaf.
Then, cut two horizontal slices, each 1 inch thick. (Use remaining bread as desired.)
Butter one side of each slice.
Evenly spread half of the cheese filling to the edge of each slice.
Sprinkle bacon over the tops.
Place sandwiches on baking sheet.
Bake at 350° till hot, 12 to 15 minutes.
Garnish with sliced olives.
Cut each sandwich into wedges.

I've been making this recipe for many years. The original recipe was published in the Better Home and Gardens' booklet "America's Best Sandwiches" some time in the 1970's or possibly early 1980's.
