Almond Spice Bars Recipe

Ingredients
4 eggs
1-1/4 cups (250 g) sugar
2-2/3 cups (400 g) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3-1/2 cups (400 g) ground almonds
2/3 cup (100 g) chopped mixed candied peel
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Generous pinch each of ground cloves, nutmeg and allspice
1 egg yolk
Water
Blanched halved almonds
Directions
Beat eggs and sugar in a large bowl until pale and creamy.
Sift flour with baking powder; add ground almonds, candied peel, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice.
Stir flour mixture into egg mixture to make a dough.
Press into a ball and wrap in foil or plastic wrap.
Refrigerate 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease baking sheets.
On a floured surface, roll out dough about 1/4 inch (5 mm) thick.
Cut into equal-sized bars; place on baking sheets.
Beat egg yolk with a little water and use to brush bars.
Place an almond half in each corner of bars.
Bake 20 minutes or until golden.
Remove from baking sheets with a spatula; cool on a rack.
