100-Year-Old Suet Cake Recipe
Ingredients
1 1/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
2 t. baking soda
1 c. molasses
2/3 c. sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 c. chopped suet
3 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
2 t. cinnamon
2 t. ginger
2 c. nutmeats
2 c. chopped dates or raisins
Directions
Dissolve soda in sour milk.
Set aside.
Mix molasses, sugar and eggs.
Add dry ingredients alternately with sour milk and soda mixture.
Add suet, nuts and floured dates or raisins.
Bake in a 9 x 13 inch greased and floured pan for 30 to 40 minutes at 275°.
Serve warm with whipped cream or a lemon sauce

I loved the cake. I was surprised because i am not a date person. I bake at 325 not 275. I plan on making again for a family function. I better start taking my cholesterol medication. I used lard instead of suet. The lemon sauce was a extra special touch.
