Tinnitus Diet

Tinnitus diet is recommended for people affected with tinnitus, a condition of the ear marked by the perception of a 'ringing' sound within the ear even when there is no actual sound around. In itself, tinnitus is not a disease, but it could be the underlying symptom of a more complex problem. Alternatively, it can also be the result of various smaller issues which, when treated, will help eliminate the tinnitus problem as well.

On a more common ground, the condition is experienced normally during colds, flu and whenever there is a blockage in the nasal passage. In such cases, the problem clears out on its own. Sometimes, however, tinnitus is more complicated and might require immediate medical attention and complete treatment. If left untreated, the problem can grow and even cause permanent loss of hearing. There is no single treatment for the condition and different physicians follow different methods. Mostly, however, the treatment consists of medication, sound therapies and a healthy diet plan. In some cases, cognitive behavioral therapy is administered, but this is a rare occurrence. Most doctors tend to follow the diet-medication routine.

Main Features of a Tinnitus Diet

A diet plan for tinnitus is generally custom made by the doctor and dietitian based on a patient’s needs, limitations, age, etc. However, there are a few general rules that are followed when charting-out a diet plan. Speaking on a very basic level, anything that improves the health works towards improving tinnitus as well. People who suffer from hypertension, for example, will feel that their tinnitus has greatly improved once their BP is under control. Certain diet rules which are strictly followed are:

Elimination/Strict Regulation of salt intake: Research has shown that salt immediately tends to worsen tinnitus. Excessive salt interferes with the normal functionality of blood vessels and increases blood pressure, this in turn greatly cuts the flow of blood into the eyes, ears and brains and that makes the 'ringing' even more prominent. Salt intake is, therefore, strictly discouraged. Even when salt is consumed, its quantity is very controlled.

Elimination/Strict Regulation of processed foods: Packaged and processed foods with enhanced flavor are seldom a part of a wholesome tinnitus diet. Consumption of fresh produce is encouraged as processed and artificially flavored foods restrict the proper flow of blood and make the condition worse.

Encouraged sugar consumption: Research has shown that most people who suffer from tinnitus have hyperinsulinemia, a sugar metabolism disorder which leads to high levels of insulin in the blood. The brain and auditory system are greatly dependent on glucose for their normal functionality. Tinnitus patients are, therefore, mostly advised to increase their sugar intake.
