Swedish food is evidently initiated from Sweden, a country in European continent. Swedish recipes are realistic and feasible. There are huge regional differences in the foods eaten in Sweden due to the large extent of the country. Swedish food varies from northern to southern parts of Sweden.

 

Like other Scandavian recipes, Swedish recipes are also quite simple and doable. The traditional recipes prepared with indigenous ingredients are highly prefered among Swedish people. ‘Husmanskost’ is the term popular in Sweden for the traditional dishes. The term is basically originated form the word ‘husman’ that means house owner in Swedish language. Though the cooking methods adopted for making Swedish food are relatively lengthy, but the end results are always marvelous.

 

As per the historical evidences, the traditional Swedish food is fatty, but some popular Swedish chefs such as Tore Wretman has introduced novel techniques to speed up the cooking process and even reduced the fat contents from the recipes.

Swedes have always been quite receptive towards the cooking methods and dishes from the foreign countries and this is quiet evident in Swedish food. Ranging from Italian cuisine to French cuisine, the food in Sweden is greatly influenced by the foreign food cultures. Sushi, café latte and pizza are the results of the impact of other cuisines during 17th and 18th centuries. Falafel and kebab are also introduced in the Swedish food as a part of Arabic and Mediterranean cuisines and has been an integral part in Swedish cuisine.

 

Ingredients Used in Swedish Recipes

Swedish food is said to be centered on the refined milk products. Sugared, crisp and spongy breads are the highlight of Swedish cuisine. Breads are usually prepared in almost all shapes and sizes. Flat breads and even short breads are highly favorable in Swedish food. Rye, wheat, oat, sourdough and many other ingredients are used toe make Swedish bread. Among the fruits; all kind of stone fruits and berries are popular.

 

Meat is also an indispensable part of food in Sweden. Beef, pork, fish and different type of seafood can be seen in the dishes prepared in Sweden. Fats are widely used to enhance the taste as well as texture of the dishes. Butter, olive oil and margarine are the popular sources of fat in dishes prepared in Swedish cuisine.

 

Potato is the main vegetable that is used mostly in mashed form. Sweets and baked products are immensely liked by Swedes. Pastries, cookies, cakes and even biscuits are highly favorable among people of all ages in Sweden.

  • Artsoppa – This is one of the most popular dishes in Sweden. It is a kind of soup prepared with peas.
  • Black pudding – This is a traditional Swedish dish. It is a kind of sausage that is prepared with dried blood of either pig or cattle. This dish is traditionally accompanied with lingonberry jam, mashed potato and carrots.
  • Kroppkakor – A dish containing mashed potato and pork dumplings.
  • Flygande Jacob – It is a conventional dish introduced in 1960 to Swedish food. This is a kind of casserole prepared with chicken, bacon, bananas and peanuts.
