Post hysterectomy diet, also called a hysterectomy recovery diet or after-hysterectomy diet, is prescribed to women who have undergone a hysterectomy recently and are in the recovery period. Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. A procedure mostly performed by a gynecologist or a surgeon in the presence of a gynecologist, it can be complete or partial. As hysterectomy is a major surgery, its recovery period can stretch up to about 8 months. This diet plan not only keeps a person healthy during the recovery period but also promotes proper recovery post a major surgery. Although the plans are individual based, there are some common inclusions:
Milk and dairy products: Milk, rich in calcium and other nutrients, is one of the best known sources of energy and is a common part of almost all hysterectomy recovery diets. Milk products like cheese, tofu, cottage cheese, yoghurt, etc., also offer all goodness of milk and their consumption is greatly encouraged. It is, however, important to note the toned milk and home-made and low-fat milk products are preferred over packaged, full-fat products.
Tea: With its fat fighting and healing properties, tea is the preferred beverage during the recovery period post a hysterectomy. Consumption of green and herbal teas is encouraged and research has shown that regular drinking can speed-up the recovery.
Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables that are high low in carbohydrates and fats form an important part of the post hysterectomy diet routine. Canned and frozen products are not recommended. Fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, are encouraged in raw form or in soups, salads, etc.
Post Hysterectomy: Foods to be Avoided
In a hysterectomy recovery diet, any food which puts pressure on the digestive system is advised against. Light, healthy and easy to digest food items are recommended as exercise is difficult during the recovery period and heavy foods will not only make a patient gain weight but also irritate the systems. Some preparations, like fried foods, can also prolong the process of recovery. Alcoholic beverages and cola drinks are also consumed in very controlled quantities, if at all.
