Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Diet

Polycystic ovary syndrome diet is prescribed to women who are affected with the polycystic ovary syndrome, often referred to as PCOS. This is one of the most common female endocrine disorders. Recent studies have revealed that it affects as many as 10% of women in their reproductive age i.e., those between the ages of 12 and 45. Also, PCOS has mostly been linked directly with female sub-fertility. A PCOS diet plan is also prescribed by doctors to females looking to keep the condition at bay and also those, who are highly prone to it.

 

Of all the causes for the condition, obesity is the most prevalent one. It therefore becomes increasingly important for women to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle regime so as to keep the condition under check and to prevent it. A diet plan followed for PCOS treatment and prevention is mostly tailor-made by the doctor and dietitian based on a patient’s individual needs, limitations, age, medications and other similar factors. At the surface of it all, patients are simply put on a diet which is complete and wholesome while being completely healthy. In most cases, successful weight loss and maintenance of adequate body weight has been the most effective treatment. While the diet charts are individual based, there are some common features and inclusions:

 

Fruits and Vegetables: Healthy fruits and vegetables that are rich in essential nutrients without being fattening, like apple, watermelon and melon, are an important part of a polycystic ovary syndrome diet. Their consumption is greatly encouraged and patients looking to lose weight are most put on an all fruit-all vegetable diet as these contain all the nutrients essential for the body. Fresh fruits and vegetables are preferred over frozen and canned ones. Also, home-made preparations are encouraged.

 

Milk and milk products: Toned milk and low-fat milk products like cheese, cottage cheese and tofu are an important inclusion in the diet plan. These are rich in disease fighting properties and help with weight loss as well.

 

Dry fruits: Nuts like almonds, raisins, cashews, etc., form an important part of the diet regime. 1/3rd cup is to be consumed 5 times a week under a general PCOS diet plan. Nuts are known to keep the condition under check and also work towards slowing down its progress. Research has shown that religious consumption of dry fruits can also completely eliminate the problem.

 

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Foods to be Avoided

As the condition is directly related to obesity and weight loss is the most effective treatment, all fattening foods which are high in calorie and carbohydrates contents are strictly avoided. Fried preparation, desserts, packaged juices, cola drinks, alcoholic beverages, etc., are consumed in very limited and regulated quantities, if at all.
