'Oatcakes’ as the name sounds is type of pancake or cracker made from Oatmeal. The Oatcakes are made by either baking or cooking the pancake on a griddle. The dish is considered as one of the staple diets in the Wales and the Scottish regions of England. It is also considered as a traditional Scottish specialty. The Oatcakes is also popularly known as - Staffordshire oatcakes or Potteries oatcakes.  The Oatcakes recipe is believed to have originated during the British Colonial period. It is known to have been first made in Staffordshire and other central and northern regions of England during the 17th century. Apart from the Staffordshire Oatcakes, there are other regions like Derbyshire and Lancashire which are known for their Oatcakes recipes.


Origin of Oatcakes

Oatcakes have been a traditional dish of the Scottish and the Highland regions of England for over hundreds of years. The main reason for this is the cultivation of oats in these regions as it is the crop which can be grown in such windy and cold weather. A popular belief is that the Oatcakes recipe originated during the British Colonial rule in the Asian subcontinent, as the Oatcake is similar to the Indian flatbreads like rotis and poppadoms.


Ingredients used and popular methods of Preparing Oatcakes

There are various Oatcakes recipes based on the regions. The traditional Oatcakes recipe includes- oatmeal, flour, and yeast. One can also add skimmed milk and sugar. The above mentioned ingredients are mixed well in a large bowl. The mixture is similar to the pancake batter. The batter is covered with a clean cloth and left for an hour. Later the batter is put on well greased griddle to make an Oatcake. The Oatcake needs to be turned on to the other side, so that it is cooked well.


Serving the Oatcakes

Oatcakes are often served hot and it is mostly considered as a fast food. Oatcakes are also served with fillings like- cheese, bacon, sausage, and eggs. Pikelets are also served with Oatcakes recipes. Once the Oatcake is cold, it can be re-heated on a pan with butter or can be grilled.


Popular variations of Oatcakes

There are two more major variations of Oatcake which can be found in England, which are the Staffordshire oatcakes and the Derbyshire oatcakes. Though the ingredients of both the Oatcakes recipe are almost the same, there is a difference in the size of the dish. The Staffordshire oatcakes are smaller and thinner when compared to the Derbyshire oatcakes.
