Mocha

Mocha is a superior quality, rich Arabian coffee and it is also the name given to a strong coffee infusion which is used in making a beverage, known by the same name that is flavored with milk, sugar and cocoa.

Features of Mocha

Also known as ‘caffe mocha’ or ‘cafe mocha’, it is considered a variant of the famous ‘caffe latte’. Similar to a caffe latte, this particular coffee is also espresso-based and uses hot milk, with the difference being that it uses added chocolate, usually in the form of sweet cocoa powder, although many a times, use of chocolate syrup is also common. Further, Mochas can contain either dark or milk chocolate.

Similar to a cappuccino, café mochas typically contain the familiar milk froth on top, although they may be sometimes served with some whipped cream instead. Mainly for decorative purposes, they are usually finished with a dusting of either cocoa or cinnamon powder. Marshmallows may also be placed on top for flavor and extra appeal.

Another variant is the white café mocha, made obviously with the use of white chocolate instead of more common milk or dark varieties. In fact, there are also certain variants of the drink wherein both types of the chocolate syrups may be mixed together. Such a fusion is often referred to by a number of fancy names, including tan mocha, black and white mocha, tuxedo mocha, marble mocha and zebra too.

Etymology

Café mocha attains its name from the coastal town of Mocha in Yemen which is surrounded by the Red Sea. Mocha has been known right from as early as the fifteenth century as a dominant exporter of coffee. Especially the areas around the Arabian Peninsula imported coffee mainly from Mocha.
