Meat Tenderizer

Meat Tenderizer is a useful kitchen tool which helps to flatten and soften the meat, especially the tougher cuts of steak. It helps to soften the fibres in the meat making it easier to chew and digest. It is also useful for pounding various types of meat to make it thinner. This is particularly useful when frying or broiling the meat. It is a ‘must have’ tool for meat lovers and those who enjoy cooking a whole lot of meat recipes through the week.

Types

Mallet Meat Tenderizer – This type of meat tenderizer looks like a hammer or a mallet and therefore has been named so. It is the traditional tool for tenderizing meat. It is ideally used for boneless meat, especially the thin cut meats. It has two sides. One is smooth and is used to flatten the meat, while the other side has pyramid shaped ridges which helps to pound the meat. This tool can be made of wood or metal and has a small handle with the dual heads described above.

48 Blade Meat Tenderizer – This type of meat tenderizer has several blades. This is not used for pounding but for making small cuts in the fibres of the muscle, in the meat. It helps to puncture the meat. This helps the meat to absorb the marinade better as well as cook faster. It is mostly used with inexpensive cuts of meat because tenderizing with this tool enhances the quality and taste of these meats.

Masher Meat Tenderizer – This type of meat tenderizer looks similar to a potato masher. It has a short handle with a face, which may be smooth or ridged like in the mallet type, for proper pounding. It may be made of wood or metal such as stainless steel.

Needle Meat Tenderizer – This type of meat tenderizer has several needles to pierce the meat. It has a short handle with a circular face from which several needles are protruding. The needle meat tenderizer helps to penetrate the thicker cuts of meat compared to the lean cuts.

Rolling Meat Tenderizer – This type of meat tenderizer is usually made of stainless steel. It is easy and fun to use, because it just needs to be rolled over the meat to poke at it. It is best used for thin cuts of meat such as the ones used for country fried steak. It can be easily disassembled for easy cleaning and is also dishwasher safe. It is easy on the hand as it does not involve any pounding work.
