Jack Daniels is a world famous brand for sour mash Tennessee whiskey. The sour mash Tennessee whiskey is sold majorly all across the globe. The whiskey comes in a square shaped bottle with black label. The whiskey is produced in the distillery, owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation in Lynchburg, TN. Jack Daniel’s home country is Moore, which is a dry country, and the whiskey is not served or available at the restaurants, or stores. It is however sold by the distillery in the country.
The whiskey can easily be classified as the plain bourbon, however, this classification has been rejected by the company and it continues to market as Tennessee whiskey instead of Tennessee bourbon.
Jack Daniels was founded by Jasper Newton “Jack ” Daniel who was born in 1846. The date of his birth is not certain because his birth records were destroyed in a fire that caught the courthouse. As per the 1846 birth date, he became the master distiller when he was perhaps only 20. However, as per the biography, Blood and Whiskey, the distillery was not founded until 1875.
Jack was of scots-irish descent and of Welsh Scottish English descent and born to Lucinda Cook and Calaway Daniel. In 1911, Jack died due to blood poisoning, caused from an infection in one of his toes. Jack had no children and did not marry, however, he took care of his nephew- Lem. Lem started taking care of Jack’s business and later on handed over the distillery to his children upon his death in 1947.
Process of Making Jack Daniel’s Whiskey
Jack Daniel whiskey is made differently where the whiskey is charcoal mellowed drop by drop and stored in hand made barrels to age. The whiskey is tasted by the tasters and informed by them when it gets ready.
Whiskey is charcoal mellowed just like how Jack Daniel’s did it to keep the smoothness which is distinctive to this whiskey. Charcoaling only helps in making it the true. Tennessee whiskey and not the bourbon. Also, it helps refines the rich flavor before it actually goes into the barrels to be matured.
The whiskey is then kept in hand made barrels for maturation process. To determine if the whiskey is matured or not, it is tasted by sipping it and not by following the calendar.
When it comes to barrel making, jack Daniel’s ensures that the same care is taken while making the barrels. The craftsmen use the best of white oak and fit the staves with hands carefully. The staves and the inside char is toasted to caramelize the natural sugars of wood. The rich amber color of whiskey comes from the toasted wood. The quality of barrel is equally important as that of Jack Daniel’s whiskey itself and people at company go that extra mile to craft barrels on their own.
