Great American Cookie Company or Great American Cookies is a popular store brand in America for retailing in gourmet cookies. The company has more than 290 stores across United States. The stores are generally found in malls, in the entire country, however, most commonly in the Southeastern part of America. The company is headquartered in Atlanta.
History
Michael Coles and Arthur Karp founded Great American Cookie Company in 1977, where both the partners invested $4,000 to start a business of selling gourmet cookies based on the recipe known to Karp, which in fact was passed on to him by his grandmother. They opened the first store in Atlanta in the Perimeter Mall, which is still operational. Coles became the CEO of the company. The company and Coles had to face issues regarding the leasing space and their concept of selling the cookies outside the west and east coast markets. The company faced challenges and met with rejection from the managers and owners of mall. There were times, when the request to lease space was rejected due to the assumption that their cookie company would fail in the east and west coast markets. However, the first store got enough recognition and became successful in its very first month. They renamed the company to Great American Cookies in 1985.
Mrs. Fields Famous Brands bought the Great American Cookies from Coles in 1998, when the company had sales of more than $100 million.
NexCen Brands Inc acquired Great American Cookies on January 29,2008 and due to its Quick Service Restaurant collection of other sister restaurants like Pretzelmaker, Marble Slab Creamery, and MaggiMoo’s Ice Cream and Treatery.
All the portfolio brands were acquired by Global Franchise Group LLC in July 2010, which is an affiliate of Levine Leichtman Capital Partners, managed by GFG Management.
