Ginger Tea

Ginger Tea is the famous tea variation which is prepared by boiling the ginger root. In many of the Asian countries this tea is often served as a refreshing beverage. In China, it is normally prepared by boiling sliced ginger and is often sweetened using honey or brown sugar. In many of the countries this spicy and invigorating beverage is normally served during the chilly winter months. It is normally consumed as a digestive drink. The Filipinos call it Salabat and serve it during the chilling winter months to brave the cold and to curb various health complaints. The tea derives its spicy and invigorating quotient from ginger, which is used as the main ingredient in the tea preparation.

It is normally believed that this tea was largely valued for its therauptic values and was served to alleviate several bowel related disorders since 3000 BC. The ginger root was largely used as a digestive aid. The prominent use of the root in tea form featured for the first time in the famous Pen Tsao Ching- the bible of herbs. Micheal Castleman refers to the history of the tea and states that the use of the ginger root in curbing various gastric conditions was supported by many modern studies.

The ginger tea preparation begins by boiling the fresh or powdered ginger in water.  The root is simmered in water for about 10 minutes to absorb the maximum flavors. While serving, the tea is strained into cups and sweetened using the honey or brown sugar. Sipping this tea is considered to be good for alleviating any bowel related disorders.

The ginger is found to be active in compounds like gingerol, was found to be abundant with volatile oils such as camphene, zingiberone, linalool, borneol, bisabolene, and geranial. 

  • The ginger tea is normally considered as an effective aid for curbing colds, and correcting digestion.
  • It is considered as an effective home remedy for curbing the nausea and treating sore throat. It alleviates the stomach ache caused due to lowered body temperature.
  • It also aids in blood circulation.
  • It is found to be effective in curbing the strong pregnancy pains and is also found to be good in alleviating morning sickness.
  • There are also claims of using the ginger tea for treating muscle pains, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. But there are no concrete scientific proofs to corroborate these claims.

 

Some of the most noticeable side effects of the over consumption of ginger root may involve nausea, heartburn, gas, and bloating. It is strongly advised that people already suffering from these disorders should avoid drinking the ginger tea in large amounts.  And also such people should check with their physicians before cultivating the habit of sipping ginger laced teas. There are chances that the strong chemicals of the root used in ginger tea may react with some medications adversely.
