Garlic Dip

Garlic dip is a dipping sauce which is prepared with garlic and several other ingredients like mayonnaise, cream, parsley etc, and seasoned with salt and pepper. Roasted garlic can also be used to prepare the dip. Chopped vegetables like bell peppers, onions, artichokes, and mushrooms are used in a few recipe variations. Pieces of meat like chicken and bacon can also be incorporated into the dip. Apart from pepper, paprika may also be used to add flavor to the dip. Lemon juice and olive oil may be used to add a mellow flavor to the otherwise strongly flavored dip.

 

Commonly Used Ingredients and Preparation Overview of Garlic Dips

While there are several recipes for making the dip, one of the common recipes suggests using cottage cheese, garlic cloves, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and chopped parsley for making the dip.

 

The dip is prepared by combining together mayonnaise and cottage cheese, followed by addition of all the remaining ingredients. Finally, it is served after around an hour of its preparation.  

 

Garlic Dip Recipe Variations

Among numerous recipe variations of garlic dip, some of the popular ones are discussed below:

 

  • Creamy variant- the creamy variant of the dip is prepared by combining together mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic powder, dried parsley, and red pepper (crushed). This dip can be either served immediately or can be served after refrigerating it for a few hours to allow the flavors to infuse properly.    

 

  • Roasted garlic dipping sauce- the recipe for this dip suggests baking garlic cloves in oven and then blending the cloves with olive oil, Italian seasoning, and mayonnaise to attain a creamy and smooth texture.

 

  • Buttermilk variant- it is a blend of sour cream, mayonnaise, crushed garlic, salt, paprika, pepper, dry mustard, sugar, and buttermilk. This dip is served chilled.

 

  • Bacon based dip- this dip is prepared by blending together cream cheese, sour cream, milk, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, crumbled bacon (cooked), salt, and pepper. The dipping sauce should be prepared a day in advance prior to serving and should be stored in refrigerator.

 

  • Toum-it is the Lebanon type of garlic sauce prepared with garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Mortar and pestle (wooden) is used to prepare this dipping sauce. A variant of this dip suggests addition of mint. It is used popularly in various Lebanese sandwiches.  

 

  • Yogurt variant- peeled and grated cucumbers are combined with olive oil, yogurt, salt, and garlic cloves to prepare yogurt based garlic dip. The dip is chilled before serving.

  • Any kind of garlic dip is used as an accompaniment. Creamy variants contain higher fat. They are high in calories.
  • Thick hung yoghurt or curd should be used to make the the dip. It impart a similar texture and flavor. Low fat yoghurt is also available.
  • Mayonnaise can be substituted for healthier substitutes like low fat mayo or yoghurt based mayo.

  • The base for making such a dip is fat. It is very high in calories, fat. It can lead to chronic disorders like obesity and overweight problems.

Garlic is known to be very good for health. It helps to prevent cardiovascular disorders. Peeled garlic can be slightly coated in oil and wrapped in a foil and baked in the oven for about 30 minutes. It can be mashed, butter can be added to enhance the flavor and served as a dip.

Tip

Strained yogurt should be used to prepare yogurt based garlic dip. If it is not available, then regular yogurt can be used after straining it through cheesecloth.
