Erectile Dysfunction Diet

Erectile dysfunction diet is recommended for men suffering from erectile dysfunction, or ED, also sometimes referred to as impotency, a condition marked by the inability to obtain or hold an adequate erection. While the condition is more common in men over the age of 65, it can occur at any age.

There can be various reasons for ED. It can be a sole condition or a result of various other physical as well as psychological conditions like heart disease, stress, diabetes, trauma, hormonal imbalances and side effects of drugs. While the condition is treatable and reversible in most of the cases, it can sometimes be permanent. The treatment of ED generally involves a balance between a healthy diet and lifestyle and medication. In a few cases, counseling might also be required.

Main Features of Erectile Dysfunction Diet

A diet followed for ED generally consists of a healthy balance of fruits, vegetables and white meats like fish. The diet plan is mostly custom-made by the doctor and dietitian based on the patient's individual needs, age, limitations and other similar factors. Generally, however, foods that are rich in zinc, vitamin E and fish oil are considered the most effective in fighting erectile dysfunction and almost always form an important part of the Ed diet plan.

Some of the most commonly consumed foods, when following a diet plan for the condition, are:

Watermelon: The consumption of watermelon is greatly encouraged as research has shown that the fruit helps reverse the effects of ED through its content of citrulline, a nutrient that helps relax the blood vessels and open them up. For best effect, the watermelon should be consumed right after slicing it. The more time the fruit spends in the refrigerator, the less potent it becomes.

Foods high in zinc content: Zinc is known as one of the most effective ED fighting minerals. Foods which are rich in zinc are, therefore, included in the diet plan in large quantities. The consumption of beef, lamb, salmon, yoghurt, cheese and milk are greatly encouraged. Zinc, in addition to promoting free and healthy flow of blood, is known to boost testosterone production as well as enhance the mobility of sperm.

Ginkgo and Aswagandha, also known as the Indian Ginseng, are two important herbs which are always included in an ED diet plan. These have been used in ancient medicine and are believed to have great medicinal benefits.

Foods to be Avoided

Although there are no set rules about what food items should be avoided when following a ED diet plan, very rich foods which are high in fat, carbohydrates and calorie counts are generally discouraged. Alcohol, tea, coffee and cola drinks are also advised against.
