Epilepsy Diet

Epilepsy diet is a special diet recommended for people suffering from Epilepsy, a conditions which results in periodical fits and seizures wherein the patient loses all control over the body's functionality and movements. Involuntary muscle spasms are the most prominent characteristic of an epileptic seizure.

The treatment of epilepsy warrants a strict and regular regime of medications, checkups, exercise and right diet. What is consumed by an epileptic person is known to greatly influence the treatment and the body's response to medication.

The special diet for epileptics is called the ketogenic diet. It is a special diet which is high in fat but low in carbohydrates. In most patients, the diet has been known to greatly reduce seizures and fits. The diet is prescribed and designed by the doctor and the dietician, who also monitor it very carefully.

Main Characteristics of Ketogenic Diet

Epilepsy diet, or the ketogenic diet, is quite strict but is widely popular. There is constant calorie, fluid and protein measurement. A typical diet is based on the idea that for a patient suffering from epilepsy, 3 to 4 grams of fat should be given for every 1 gram of protein and carbohydrate. A daily diet of 75 to 100 calories for every KG of body weight is prescribed.

Food most advised during the diet are butter, heavy whipping cream, oils, mayonnaise and other high-fat foods. The food needs to be prepared very carefully as the amount of protein and carbohydrates is strictly restricted.

Ketogenic Diet: Foods to Avoid

As Epilepsy diet does not really restrict food items, there are no strict guidelines about what should be avoided and what should be completely eliminated from the diet plan. It is, however, important to remember that the intake of proteins and carbohydrates is very regulated and therefore, food which are high in these need to be eaten carefully.

It is important to remember that despite having some common elements, each Epilepsy diet is different and custom designed for the patients. It is, therefore, important to consult the physician before starting a diet plan.
