Enlarged Prostate Diet

Enlarged prostate diet is prescribed to men suffering from an enlarged prostate, a condition marked by the enlargement of the prostate gland, a part of the male reproductive system. While an enlarged prostate is not always malignant, it is a condition which can grow to be so if not taken care of in a timely and proper manner. It has been seen that most of the males tend to suffer from the condition by the time they reach their mid-40s, and while a few dietary and lifestyle changes are all that are needed to treat the problem, a more complex treatment might have to be followed in a few cases.

If taken care of well in time, an enlarged prostate is completely curable but if the condition is left unchecked, it can lead to more complications like bladder and kidney damage, UTI, bladder stone, etc. To treat the condition, doctors generally balance a healthy diet with a course of medication. A diet plan for enlarged prostate is generally tailor-made by the doctor and dietitian based on a patient's individual needs and limitations. Before following a diet plan, it is important to consult the physician.

Main Features of an Enlarged Prostate Diet

A healthy diet has been known to have a profound effect on the treatment of an enlarged prostate. Research has shown that some foods have the capability of fighting the disease and slowing its progress. Although the diet plans are generally custom-made for patients, some common inclusions are:

Fresh fruits and vegetables: In a diet plan for an enlarged prostate, consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is greatly encouraged. Canned products are not recommended and it is always better to pick fruits and vegetables which are organic and easy to cook and digest.

Water: It is very important to stay hydrated when suffering from an enlarged prostate. Patients are encouraged to drinks lots of water when following an enlarged prostate diet as it helps flush out toxins and bacteria from the body.

Fresh fruit juice: Although it is always better to eat raw fruits, drinking freshly squeezed juice of some fruits, like cranberry and orange, is greatly encouraged as these are known to relieve the symptoms of a possible UTI.

Other food items which are almost always a part of the diet plan are foods rich in Vitamin D, Zinc and Vitamin E, fluids, white meats, milk and easy-to-digest dairy products, to name a few.
