Emu meat, as the name suggests, is the meat of Australian bird, emu. Emu, a flightless bird, offers red meat which is rich in protein and contains very less fat. The meat of emu is lean and has a delicious flavor along with rich nutrition. Emu meat is sometimes referred to as “nutritional goldmine” also due to its health benefits. The meat of emu, when compared to meat of venison, elk, ostrich and beef, is lower in fat and richer in proteins, iron and other nutrients. The meat of this bird is approximately 97% fat free and contains rich amount of vitamin A, B12 and C. The bird is raised naturally and thus the meat derived does not contain any chemicals. The fat derived from emu is 43% monounsaturated and is helpful in lowering the bad cholesterol in the body. The consumption of emu meat is beneficial for those suffering from heart diseases.

 

Tips for Cooking Emu Meat

  • Emu meat has the tendency to lose moisture and therefore requires careful cooking. Here are some tips to cook the meat of emu efficiently
  • There is very less shrinkage while cooking emu meat as the meat is devoid of fat, skin and bones. Hence, it is advisable to buy three fourth of emu meat in comparison to other meats.
  • The meat of emu can be cooked easily in a shorter span of time and that too on low temperatures. Fan fillet and top loin are the soft emu cuts.
  • While grilling the meat, it should be cooked to light medium at 150 degrees- 160 degrees only. For fully cooked emu meat recipes, moist-heat cooking method is mostly recommended. The meat, even when cooked properly, tends to retain the red color; therefore the meat should not be over-cooked and browned.
  • Emu meats can also be roasted, stir-fried and braised. The meat of emu bird tastes somewhat similar to beef meat and thus can be used as a substitute in beef recipes
  • Emu meat absorbs flavors easily and in less time. Therefore, the meat can be marinated in less time and cooked well. Sweet marinades offer a rich taste to this bird’s meat and thus can be used easily.
  • Emu meat tastes best when smoked. The meat should be soaked for at least two hours in brine and then smoked.

  • Roasted emu - For this emu meat recipe, the dry spices like garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, basil, and parsley are mixed well and used as marinade for the meat.
