Egg cream, is a drink which is contrary to its name and contains neither egg nor cream.Infact, it is a drink that is made of chocolate syrup, milk, and soda water. It can be considered as a traditional ‘fountain drink’- which is a sweetened syrup, carbon dioxide, and water. The drink was popularly known as the ‘Poor man’s drink’, since it was just a little costly than the normal soda. The drink was soon recognized widely and gained popularity widely. It was traditionally made with chocolate syrups though there are various alterations to it in the modern times.
Egg Cream Recipe- History And Origin
Egg cream is supposed to have originated in New York during the late 19th century. Soon it became a popular drink due to its sweetened taste and high fizz. There was high froth on top of the drink. The drink could be compared to the traditional ice cream soda, which was a soft drink with one or more scoops of ice cream. The only difference being that it does not consists of ice cream.
Egg Cream Recipe- Variations
The traditional Egg cream has three basic ingredients – milk, chocolate syrup and seltzer. To make the Egg cream, cold whole milk is used along with two-thirds of the seltzer, which is just opened. To this mixture the chocolate syrup is added. The dish needs to be consumed immediately since it loses its fizz otherwise. Usually it is served in a Coke style glass. Since, the drink was hard to be bottled so it remained as a product of the New York soda fountains.
Brooklyn Egg cream was made with the chocolate syrup while the New York Egg cream consisted of vanilla syrup. The best vanilla syrup to be known for making Egg cream was U- Bet’s vanilla syrup. Yet another variation to the recipe is the San Francisco Egg cream that contains both chocolate as well as hazelnut syrup.
