Dessert Sauce

Dessert sauce is thick syrup drizzled on puddings, cakes, cheesecakes, fruits and ice-creams. Some popular recipe brands can be readily bought from the market or some of them can be easily made at home. Dessert sauces are usually sweet with a few sour varieties but even some plain tasting ones are quite appealing. It can be consumed hot or cold. There are numerous basic sauce recipes which can be modified to make countless toppings of one’s own choice. It can be prepared for immediate use or can be stored in refrigerator for later usage. Sometimes preservatives may be added to keep it fresh for long. A dessert sauce can make even a boring dish lively and delicious.  A few of them get thickened on cooling which by further heating regain its consistency. Some recipes especially chocolate sauce and strawberry sauce are the favorites amongst the kids which may induce them to consume more of fruits.

 

 

Origin of Dessert Sauce Recipe
There are countless varieties of dessert sauces and their associated history is quite diversified. The history of a particular sauce is based on the evolution of the ingredient used in the recipe. With the discovery of chocolate in Spain new ideas erupted with using it in variety of forms, one of it being the chocolate sauce. The butterscotch sauce is the favorite American dessert sauce whereas the strawberry sauce is known to be introduced during the colonial days in 1700.

 

 

Ingredients and Method of Preparing Dessert Sauce
The basic ingredients for dessert sauces are butter, sugar and cream. The caramel sauce can be prepared by boiling all the ingredients till the required consistency and finally adding vanilla essence. Chocolate sauce is made with further addition of some cocoa powder, corn syrup and nuts. Sugar, butter, egg and milk can make into the delicious vanilla sauce. Coffee in this recipe can make the Café au Lait sauce or orange sauce with orange rinds. Strawberries, raspberries and cherries are used in some popular fruit sauces. Peach dessert sauce includes peaches, mandarin oranges and apricots preserves with cornstarch. The blueberry sauce with sugar, cornstarch, butter and blueberries is a royal dessert sauce.

 

 

Variations in Dessert Sauce Dishes
Ground cinnamon or coffee or brandy can be added to the caramel sauce for new flavors. Instead of using cocoa powder chocolate chips can be added in the chocolate sauce. Butter used in the recipes can be replaced with sugar free peanut butter. Sugar can be replaced with maltitol syrup.

 

 

Serving Dessert Sauce
The dessert sauces are used as toppings for desserts can also be served as accompaniments to some recipes. Some exotic syrup of chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, etc. can be drizzled over cakes, ice-creams, puddings, and pancakes. They can be served with pastries or fresh fruits. The blueberry sauce with blueberry cream French toast is amazing. The lemon dessert sauce is used with ice-creams and ginger bread.

 

Dessert Sauces – Health Facts
Cream and butter being the prime ingredient of dessert sauces make it a caloric recipe with substantial fat, sugar and sodium content. Maltitol syrup used in some recipes supplements the sugar content. Sometimes use of sugar free peanut butter in dessert sauce makes the delicacy nutritive.
