Dementia Diet

Dementia diet is prescribed for people affected with dementia, a condition marked by a serious loss of cognitive ability. The condition generally affects people who are previously unimpaired and takes loss of functionality to a level which is beyond what normally might be expected from aging.

While dementia often affects people in their old age, there have been cases of the younger population getting affected as well. The condition is generally managed through a balance of healthy eating, lifestyle and medication. In some cases, counseling might be needed as well. When it comes to a diet plan for the effective management of dementia, there is no single set plan. Depending upon a patient's individual needs and limitations, doctors and dietitians generally custom-make a diet plan.

Main Features of a Dementia Diet

Research has shown that a proper diet can slow the progress of dementia in people who have already been affected and can help prevent the condition in those who are susceptible to it. A light and healthy French or Mediterranean diet is known to have a positive effect in cases of dementia. Although the diet plan is mostly custom made, there are some common factors:

Fish: In a dementia diet plan, the consumption of fish is greatly encouraged. Patients suffering from the condition and those who are looking to prevent it include fish, rich in Omega 3 acids, in their diet at least thrice a week. In Alzheimer's, particularly, fish consumption has been known to have a lot of benefits.

Fruits: Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals which encourage the normal functionality of the brain and help undo the damage caused to cognitive abilities by dementia. In a dementia diet, fruits are a very important inclusion. It is, however, important to note that consumption of canned fruits is greatly discouraged and fresh fruits are favored.

Vegetables: Raw vegetables, especially green and leafy ones, are an important food item in a daily diet plan of those suffering from dementia. These vegetables are replete with nutrients which promote the healthy functionality of the brain. Consumption of fresh vegetables, preferably organic, is encouraged over canned vegetables or processed ones.

Foods to be Avoided

Processed and canned foods are greatly discouraged when following a diet plan for  preventing/treating dementia. In addition, consumption of beverages like cola drinks, alcohol, coffee and tea is also strictly regulated. These are generally allowed in very controlled quantities, if at all.
