Cream Of Turkey Soup

Cream of Turkey Soup is a soup dish made with turkey meat as the main ingredient. The soup has a very thick and creamy texture because of the use of heavy cream, butter and white sauce as essential ingredients. The soup is sometimes made even thicker by adding flour, cornflower or egg yolk. The savory preparation is exceptionally popular in America, where turkey is one of the most consumed meats.

An average sized (100g.) serving of the creamy soup has about 250 calories, 20 grams of fat and 9 grams of carbohydrates.

Cream of Turkey Soup Recipe Overview

Ingredients: Turkey meat, heavy cream, butter, white sauce, broth (mostly chicken), oil and a light seasoning of salt and pepper are the traditional ingredients used in the preparation of the basic version of the Cream of Turkey Soup. Vegetables, meats, herbs and spices are often added to the soup to make it more filling. The additions generally depend on the recipe followed to make the dish. Onion, potato, tomato, leeks and corn are some vegetables that complement turkey meat, and chicken, ham and bacon are some of the most widely used meats in the soup.

Preparation Overview: Creamy Turkey Soup is a fairly easy preparation and it takes about 30 minutes to make 3 to 4 average sized serving. The soup is cooked over direct heat in a Dutch oven or metal pot. The turkey meat (and vegetables and meats, if used) is quickly fried in butter or oil for a few minutes and then mixed with the white sauce, butter and cream. The concoction is blended for a few seconds and then transferred to a Dutch oven or pot along with all the other ingredients. The pot or Dutch oven is placed over direct heat. The soup is cooked till it has achieved a thick and very creamy consistency.

Cream of Turkey Soup Recipe Variations

There are various variations of the traditional Cream of Turkey Soup. While there are some recipes that call for the use of vegetables that complement turkey meat, there are some that require the use of other meats like chicken and ham. For people who are lactose intolerant, the soup is made suitable by removing all dairy products and replacing them with coconut milk and olive oil. The low-calorie, low-fat version of the soup is made by replacing heavy cream and butter with light cream and margarine. Also, boiled turkey meat (and vegetables) is used instead of fried ones. The soup is often spiced up by using spices like paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, clove, etc.

Serving Suggestions

The Creamy Turkey Soup can be served hot or cold. While mostly served as an appetizer, the more filling versions of the soup can also be a part of the main course or a wholesome meal in themselves. Grated cheese and croutons are often used as garnish and the soup is ladled into bowls before it is served. Toasted bread makes a good accompaniment.
