Collagenous Colitis Diet

Collagenous colitis diet refers to group of foods or food items which help to alleviate the condition called "Collagenous Colitis," characterised as a bowel disease which induces a bout of chronic diarrhea. This condition is caused due to the inflammation of colon. Collagenous colitis can be cured with the help of medications and making changes to the diet.

Collagenous Colitis Diet: Foods to Eat
While following a diet to curb the severity of collagenous colitis, a person should have:

  • Gluten-Free Foods:  The food products containing gluten are known to tease the intestinal lining and cause more inflammations. So, it is largely recommended to avoid the gluten based foods during the bout of collagenous colitis. Foods made with wheat, rye and barley should be completely avoided and instead, whole –grains should be introduced to the diet.

  • Fluids: People suffering from collagenous colitis should have fluids loaded with electrolyte to curb the loss of minerals like potassium and sodium which are lost because of chronic diarrhea. Water consumption is largely encouraged and along with it, fruit juice, broth and Gatorade are also considered to be good for consumption.

  • Soft Foods: Patients suffering from collagenous colitis should have foods that are low in fiber in order to heal the inflamed colon. High fiber foods can aggravate the inflammation and worsen the symptoms. High fiber foods can be slowly introduced back to the diet regime once the symptoms of collagenous colitis completely subside. Some of the best to have soft foods include applesauce, mashed potatoes, bananas and rice. Foods high in fiber like legume, barley, millet, beans, etc should be avoided.

Collagenous Colitis Diet: Foods to Avoid
While following a diet to treat colleganeous colitis a person should avoid the following foods:

  • Spicy and Fatty Food: The spices and fats can irritate the gastro intestinal tract so it is highly recommended to avoid them totally while enduring the bout of collegenous colitis. Baked and fried foods should be avoided at large.

  • Caffeine:  It is strongly recommended to avoid caffeine because it is a diuretic which contributes to the loss of water from the body.  This will further affect the healing process of colon and also subject the body to dehydration. Caffeine also puts pressure on the gastro intestinal tract and increases the rate of motions thereby increasing the severity of diarrhea . Caffeine is also advised against while following a collagenous colitis diet because it is highly acidic and it may aid in production of irritating stomach acids.
