Piroshki or Pirozhki are small bite sized buns with a filling. Fillings range from sweet to savory to spicy and can have almost anything depending on the cuisine in mention. These buns are usually fried or baked. Piroshki is a Russian word and it is seen that this dish is popular in cuisines of countries bordering Russia or having a Russian influence.
Making Piroshki
Piroshki is made from a yeast based soft dough which is stuffed with different fillings and then usually baked with an egg glaze. Filling in Piroshki can be vegetables, meat, fruits, nuts, etc. Though the shape differs from cuisine to cuisine they are commonly made into a roll, enclosed from all sides.
Varieties of Piroshki
Armenian Piroshki – This variety of Piroshki is made with a filling of meat or potatoes and popularly sold as a street food.
Greek Piroshki – This variety of Piroshki are deep fried and consist of variety of fillings. They are a popular street food.
Latvia Piroshki – This variety of Piroshki have a bacon and onion stuffing, they are crescent shaped and baked. The sweet Piroshki here have a filling of dates, nuts and apples.
