Cheese straws are crispy, snappy and crunchy snack item. This straw shaped savory is very popular in the southern part of US. They are a perfect holiday snack and party appetizers. They are a sophisticated version of the regular party snacks and a great accompaniment with soups, stews or salads. They also make for a perfect cocktail snack. It is said that this dish was made from leftover biscuit dough mixed with cheese and made into long narrow strips. Cheese straws can be dated back to the 18th Century. The authentic long straw has given way to bite-sized cookies. However, the taste is almost similar. This kind of shape is a variant of the dish.

 

Ingredients of Cheese Straws

Very few ingredients are needed for this recipe and it is easy to make. There is no need for food processors or cookie press. The dough can simply be cut into long straw shape and baked. The dough is easy to make it requires all purpose flour, cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese, salt, pepper (preferably cayenne), minced herbs and butter. Egg may also be used for binding the cheese straws dough. The choice of cheese depends on individual taste buds. Some of the common types of cheese that are used in the cheese straw recipe are cream cheese, blue cheese or asiago. Depending on the type of cheese, the straws will have a salty or sharp taste.

 

Preparation and Serving Method of Cheese Straws

The preparation method is quite simple. All the ingredients are mixed in flour and cut into long straw shape for baking. It is then seasoned with herbs and additional flavoring. It may be topped with butter for a salty taste. Cheese straws can be served hot with Worcestershire sauce.
