Cheddar Cheese Powder

Cheddar cheese powder is cheddar cheese in powdered form, which is prepared by dehydrating normal cheddar cheese for the sake of functionality and convenience. It's easy to use, and hence the obvious choice in various cheddar cheese based recipes. Cheddar cheese powder can be used to flavor popcorn, to make cheese sauce or it can be added to soups, etc.

Making Cheddar Cheese Powder

For making cheddar cheese powder, the hard cheddar cheese is first sliced into small pieces. Thinner slices mean quicker dehydration of the cheese. One should try to make the slices of as much the same size as possible, as then the cheese slices will dehydrate at the same speed.

Now single layers of cheddar cheese slices are placed in a food dehydrator. Space should be left between the cheese pieces so that they don’t touch each other. The dehydrator should be lined with wax paper or plastic wrap if soft cheese is being dehydrated.

The cheddar cheese is turned every few hours, until it dries in the dehydrator. On turning the cheese, grease should be absorbed in a paper towel. When the cheese is dry it will attain a hard texture and darkened color. One should ensure complete dryness of the cheese before removing it from the dehydrator.

The dehydrated cheese slices are then allowed to cool. They are then processed into a fine powder in a food processor. The resulting cheddar cheese powder is stored in airtight and watertight packets, away from light.
