Cappuccino

Cappuccino is a kind of coffee based drink prepared with the aid of an Espresso machine. It is usually topped with foamed hot milk and contains steam created with the Espresso machine as well. Making the drink consists of three prominent stages where the bottom third of the cup is filled with espresso and then with an equal amount of hot milk. A frothy form of milk that becomes stiff occupies the top third of the cup. The froth or foam  is generally prepared a minute or two in advance.

The foamy top layer  is shaped into a stiff peak which is topped liberally with chocolate shavings, sugar granules or cinnamon powder according to choice. The stiff drink is customarily consumed with the help of a tea spoon.

The traditional cappuccino recipe followed in the European countries and the old fashioned coffee houses of America serve the froth and cappuccino combination in 150 to 180 ml cups whereas the popular commercial coffee chains across the United States of America serve considerably more of the drink in a 350 ml measure.

The Italians who are believed to have introduced the first cappuccino recipe to the world consider it to be a morning drink and seldom consume it after 11 in the morning. It enjoys much popularity in the United Kingdom too as the British prefer having their coffee with milk.

History Of Cappuccino Recipe

The popular legend of Marco_d'Aviano and his routing of the Turks in 1683 tells the story of the bitter Turkish coffee sweetened by milk and honey. The drink derived its name  from the Capuchin order of monks to which d'Aviano belonged. However, there are no records pertaining to this and it may well be a folklore without any associated facts.

The modern day Espresso machine was created and patented by Luigi Bezzera of Milan, Italy in 1901 which soon resulted in a spurt of the cappuccino recipe being tried out by various cafes and restaurants. The World War II saw the improvement of the machine for preparing cappuccino which was then converted into a high pressured one.

Ingredients And Popular Cappuccino Recipe

The prime ingredients for a coffee drink prepared according to the typical cappuccino recipe are coffee and hot milk. The temperature as well as the texture of the milk is all important while preparing the drink as is the shot of espresso. According to the Italian cappuccino makers the barista or the coffee bar attendant succeeds in creating tiny air bubbles into the milk while steaming it. These bubbles lend a velvet like texture to the milk. The traditional drink made according the Italian style involves pouring hot milk containing foam on top of the espresso. Any difference in the ratio of espresso and milk alters the taste considerably making the cappuccino recipe one of the most difficult arts to master.

There are two distinct variations of the drink with cappuccino chiaro or the white cappuccino being prepared with a larger quantity of milk while the cappuccino scuro ( dark variety) uses very less of the hot milk in its recipe. These are also known as wet and dry cappuccinos respectively.

Variations Of Cappuccino

The acceptance and popularity of the drink has resulted in a widespread vending of the beverage at small establishments known as convenience stores. However, the drink labeled as cappuccino there is very dissimilar to the actual beverage and is created in a machine used to mix cola based drinks. It also uses double brewed coffee which is nothing like the espresso in taste. Additional flavors like the crème, vanilla and mocha are often added to this version  in order to enhance its taste. The entire drink is made from dry powders and the machines do not require too much of maintenance which is convenient to use.

Cappuccino Freddo or the iced version of the drink is also popular although it is served without the customary froth in North America. Cold milk is added to the drink in Italy where it is not served with ice. A blend of gelato and it is served as gelato da bere in Milan where the shakerato or cappuccino shaken with crushed ice is also served. Cold foam is added to the coffee drink just before serving it in countries occupying the Mediterranean region.

Health Facts of the Coffee Based Drink

The health related facts are similar to that of caffeine, some of which like mental alertness or loss of sleep are remarkably less pronounced due to its dilution by milk and foam. It is effective in combating lethargy and helps in mental acuity. The positive effect of caffeine on Parkinson’s disease, gall bladder disorders, liver ailments and Alzheimer’s disease has been widely publicized although there are no concrete facts associated with it. Drinking it in moderation is considered to be beneficial but overindulgence may lead to health complications in the long run.
