Breadcrumbs, also known as bread crumbs, are sandy or powdery and coarse, dried inner parts of bread different from the crust. Used for crumbing or breading, topping casseroles, poultry stuffing, stew thickening, and for adding substance to meatloaves, breadcrumbs are a handy ingredient for many recipes. Prepared by baking or toasting old bread to remove moisture and pulverizing the product in a food processor, breadcrumbs in the fried incarnation make their presence felt in a variety of delicious soups.
