The Bahama Mama drink is a popular and classic rum-based cocktail that essentially emerged as a beach drink. It is considered one of the best tropical cocktails and brings together rum, coffee and coconut liqueurs and pineapple juice.

The drink essentially has a sweet, fruity taste and although it contains alcohol, it does taste very much like an alcoholic drink. This cocktail is considered the most perfect drink for hot summer times.

Bahama Mama Cocktail: Origin

Although not much is known about how the cocktail came into being, the Bahama Mama probably originated in the Bahamas region and is today one of the most well known and widely consumed drinks in the Bahamas.

Ingredients and Method of Preparation: Bahama Mama Cocktail Recipe

The original Bahama Mama drink recipe brought together proof rum, dark rum, coffee liqueur, coconut liqueur, pineapple juice, grenadine and lemon juice. Over the years, variations of the cocktail have emerged but the basic preparation and servings methods remain the same, what differs are some ingredients. Garnishing is done using strawberries, cherries or orange slices.

Preparation of the drink does not take more than a few minutes and is made much like any other cocktail. All the ingredients are put in a tumbler with ice or cracked ice, based on the version being prepared, shaken and served with the preferred garnishing.

Serving Bahama Mama

The drink is served chilled in a Collins glass. The drink is served with cracked ice and garnished with strawberry or cherry or with a slice of orange which has been pierced with a toothpick. The cocktail can also be served in the Highball glass as Collins and Highball are generally used interchangeably.

Variations in Bahama Mama Recipe

For a Bahama Mama Sunrise, a popular variation of the drink, the grenadine is not added to the shaker. Instead, it is set afloat on to the top of drink after it has been poured. Coconut flavored rum is used for more tropical tasting variations. People looking to make their own versions of the Bahama Mama drink generally experiment with different juices and pineapple is generally substituted with cranberry or grapefruit juice.
