The Baconnaise is a commercial product made with a mayonnaise base. It has a taste like that of bacon, which is the specialty of this product. It has a combination of the creamy mayonnaise with a slight smoky taste of bacon. In short, it tastes like a bacon-flavored mayonnaise. It is light orange in color and has a smooth creamy texture. Baconnaise is used as a spread for sandwich, dip for fried foods, and can be put on burgers, salad, chicken, and much more. Launched in 2008, the Baconnaise gained popularity after being featured in the The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009.
History
According to the JD Foods company website, the idea for Baconnaise evolved with a customer request, “spreadable bacon, namely mayonnaise.” This combination was experimented by Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow, founders of JD Foods, several times until the perfect flavor was hit upon. The final product was released in November 2008. Statistics reveal that about 40,000 jars of Baconnaise were sold within six months, and the number crossed one million after the product was featured in the shows with Jon Stewart and Oprah Winfrey.
Ingredients and Preparation
Although it has the smoky taste of bacon, Baconnaise does not have the bacon as an ingredient. Baconnaise is entirely vegetarian and does not have any artificial flavors or MSG. The actual process of making the Baconnaise is kept a secret, for obvious reasons.
Serving and Eating Baconnaise
Baconnaise is used as a spread on sandwich or it can be used as a dip for any fried food. It can be used in place of regular mayonnaise.
Popular Baconnaise Variations
There is no popular Baconnaise variation in the market as yet, but homemade baconnaise is often tried using liquid bacon fat and egg yolks.
