Known as Apple Crisp in the United States, Apple Crumble is usually served along with cream, custard or icecream. Origin of Apple Crumble
Apple Crumble is known to have originated in Britain during World War II. The history says that, the Apple Crumble recipes were invented to replace the more extravagant apple pie recipes. But it was not until 1924 that this dish found a mention in print. Over the years, this dish has gained in popularity and today has become a customary preparation mostly during the Fall, when apples are available in plenty. Though apples are most commonly used to make fruit crumbles, pears, peaches and berries are good substitutes.
Variants of Apple Crumble
Apple Crumble recipes take many variations. Apple brown betty is one such popular variant made using layers of apples and buttered bread that is often paired with sauce. Where as in Apple Cobbler, yet another variant of Apple Crumble, uses stewed apples and is usually seen topped with biscuit-like batter. Apple Crumble can be had warm with a dollop of whipped cream, or had cold with a scoop of icecream.
