Aloo Matar

 

Aloo matar is a popular everyday dish all over India. It is generally made in every household. The spices and the way of cooking differ from person to person. Aloo matar literally means potato green peas. This dish is a curried potato and green pea dish which can be dry or with gravy. It can be mildly flavoured or spicy.

 

 

Ingredients and Preparation

 

Potatoes and green peas are the main ingredients for this dish. Regular Indian spices like turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder and cumin are used. Mustard seeds can also be used to season it. The gravy can be made by cooking together onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic

Potatoes and green peas are added and the vegetables are either pressure cooked or cooked with a lid in a pan.

 

 

Serving

 

Aloo mater is served as a curry with roti or chapatti. It can also be served with puris or rice. South Indians serve it with dosa or appam.

Aloo mater is a low calories curry with good amount of fiber and protein. It makes  wholesome meal when served with a bread or rice.

Potato is a good source of vitamin A. It is rich in carotenoids like zeaxanthin which protects the eyes and prevents macular degeneration. It is rich in phytonutrients and vitamin B6 which help in cardiovascular protection and nervous system development.

Green peas are rich in nutrients and minerals. It is low in calories and a good source of fiber. It is a good source of vitamin C and K. Green peas also have cholesterol lowering properties. They are a good source of protein and help in blood sugar regulation.
