Allergies Diet

 

Allergies diet or Allergy Avoidance Diet involves consumption of food items that prevent allergic reactions in the body, or avoidance of foods that cause specific allergies in specific individuals.  Although a diet plan for allergies should be charted out as per the individual case and allergic reactions, a general pattern of allergic diets is as discussed below.

 

Allergy Avoidance Diet: Foods to Consume

  • An allergies diet usually includes foods like rice, lamb, many types of vegetables and beans, and gluten-free grains like millet and amaranth.
  • Sweeteners included are usually just maple syrup or syrup of brown rice.
  • Beverages recommended for such a diet are pear nectar, rice milk, chamomile tea or sparkling water containing no added sweeteners.

 

Allergy Avoidance Diet: Foods to Avoid

An allergy diet excludes specific foods to which the body shows allergic reactions. These foods are either completely removed from the diet plan, or included in it on a rotation basis if necessary. One should take care to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to compensate for essential nutrients missed out due to avoidance of staples like wheat or corn.

  • Common culprits for allergies are cow's milk, wheat, corn, diary products, soy based foods and eggs, as they contain common allergens.
  • Artificial food colors, additives, taste enhancers like monosodium glutamate (MSG) and sulfites should also be removed from diet. Most of these substances are found in pre-packaged or ready to eat foods, and Chinese food often contain MSG.

 

A Typical Allergy Avoidance Diet Plan

  • Breakfast -A typical allergies diet often contains a breakfast including hot rice or alternately grains like millet, and fruits and nuts like pears, cashews, etc.
  • Lunch-this may include rice based pasta with a topping of garlic
  • Dinner-Lamb stew containing various types of vegetables and flavoring herbs as per individual taste.

Planning an allergy prevention meal is simple when it comes to avoiding specific foods like wheat or cow's milk, but may be more complex when avoiding processed foods, condiments, etc. as it is difficult to catch the presence of the allergen containing ingredient.
